Switched sides to the Rebellion this time, another crashed Star Wars fighter outside of the SW-universe.
.
Just realized that I have not posted this although it was finished in August 2022 already!
I started this journey around 2013, back then I did not know as much about composition as I know today and somehow, knowledge makes decisions harder.
Today I believe the sweet spot is to make decisions based on a gut feeling and from experience and later on, justify or make changes based on measurements and not taking measurement too serious as well. There is no exact science about it but every session and every piece of this project is a humble experience in devotion. A silent mentorship for which I'm thankful.
For me these classical paintings are an open book. What you put in, is what you get out, sometimes it is really that simple, and time is all it needs.
.
But, as easy as it looks, the composition of that Starfighter was tricky – mainly because the shape of that X-Wing is unique. And it is even harder to make it recognizable when its crashed. This means wrapping your head around certain challenges - which I really enjoy as part of my process.
.
Painting it into an existing landscape piece (like all the "Ancient Kaiju" pieces) demands to build upon the existing artwork, not to subtract from it. That is the reason why this series – although digitally painted – still takes so long, because my goal is it to have an organic amalgamation, a natural appearance - as if Peder Monsted himself would have painted it that way.
