What is better than a painting with a dragon?
A painting featuring 16 dragons I'd say ;)
This one is done for the third artist grant I received this year for which I wanted to do 4 Ancient Kaiju pieces. This is number 2.
I believe this worked well as the original from Joseph Wright of Derby is from 1775.
Swipe left to see some process pics and the original piece. In terms of composition, this one was straight forward and the volcano fits exactly into the dynamic root rectangle which is known to be used quite often in that time. Derby made no exception to the rules but I did because I changed the aspect ratio and added flying dragons in there ;)
I focused on the circular enclosure depicted by the clouds in the back and my work with the dragons framed the focal point by adding contrast, tension and a new element.
I hope you like my result as much as I enjoyed working and especially learning from this old masterpiece!
This piece was posted first on March on my Patreon, really sorry for the delay…
